A period Empire rosewood daybed with beautiful carved details. It was adapted into a functional sofa with a closely matched carved back rail, with the option of using it or not. It retains it’s original highly polished finish. The drop in seat and back cushions are covered in tapestry fabric in good condition. The back cushion folds out to fit on top of the seat to create a thick, comfortable bed. It measures 79 inches wide, 33 1/2 inches deep and 33 1/2 inches high. With the optional back rail installed, the height of the center crest is 42 1/2 inches. The entire piece is easily dismantled for transport. Upholstery is recent and in very fine condition, with brass nailhead trim. The restored finish is in very fine condition, preserving some shrinkage separations for antique character, see photos. Reglued to serve another generation, the frame is tight and strong. The seat cushion is quite firm on this historic East Coast furniture. Brass wheels are original. A very interesting form, striking and angular, this Empire Box-form sofa is an interesting display of bold proportions and materials so commonly associated with the period. Crafted during the last quarter of the 19th century, probably in America but possibly England, the sofa clearly lends to the taste of the Victorian period though with a simplicity of form that is most attractive. The arms are supported by oversized barrel columns with ring turned capitals over intricately turned feet, an architectural statement that raises the level surface of the arms and back most dramatically. The upholstery is in decent condition, but a brighter neutral covering would be most striking against the dark wood surfaces of the sofa. It is an unusual piece that will lend great visual interest to any room it becomes a part of. Measurements: 71 W x 31 3/4 D x 26 H.
