A very interesting form, striking and angular, this Empire Box-form sofa is an interesting display of bold proportions and materials so commonly associated with the period. Crafted during the last quarter of the 19th century, probably in America but possibly England, the sofa clearly lends to the taste of the Victorian period though with a simplicity of form that is most attractive. The arms are supported by oversized barrel columns with ring turned capitals over intricately turned feet, an architectural statement that raises the level surface of the arms and back most dramatically. The upholstery is in decent condition, but a brighter neutral covering would be most striking against the dark wood surfaces of the sofa.
