We are offering for your consideration this elegant filtwood antique pair of fauteuils. Either French or Italian, probably dating from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. These extraordinary chairs feature finely hand-carved details and a classic damask fabric that is in good condition with some fading. The back fabric is torn and it appears that some of the filling is missing. Some gold loss to the finish which has been lightly restored. Also one of the rosettes is missing on one of the legs. This set includes two matching armchairs, one is in perfect condition, the other needs a repair, both of which are listed under my other items. The look and feel of this piece is sublime, the curved sides and ornately carved legs combined with the beautifully aged Giltwood really make this piece scream style, charm and charisma. It has been lightly restored to include basic frame repairs, the upholstery is all original and in good order so it has been left as it is. Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point, if you would like any additional or specific measurements please ask. This item is available for collection from our Wimbledon warehouses SW19-3BE, we can have it delivered nationwide to include Scotland Wales and Ireland. The carved giltwood furniture nicely frames finely woven Aubusson tapestry upholstery playfully illustrated with scènes galantes of a mother, and her children. The high level of craftsmanship displayed in this set would have been affordable for aristocracy only, and examples of this furniture are on view in many palace museums throughout Europe. READ ABOUT OUR GALLERY. VERY FINE LOUIS XVI STYLE CARVED GILTWOOD SETTEE. Paris, circa 1900 Item # 905KFP16L. Beautifully carved and gilded, this striking Belle époque settee is crafted in the typical manner of the Louis XVI taste during the fourth quarter of the 19th century. Tight infinite swirls and motifs of acanthus and foliage are tastefully developed in the moldings and surfaces throughout under a vibrant early gilding. The legs are particularly attractive with the spiral turned-fluting along the tapered leg, each of these situated below a generous relief-carved swirling rosette. There is a certain imaginative quality to the embellishments of the surface throughout, first in the truly exquisite scrolled and anthemion decorated crest focal point but further in the small details added throughout the frame. A hand-woven and needlepoint Aubusson covering, perhaps original or at least quite early, remains in fair condition on the back and seat. For anyone with a passion for the French taste, it is a stunning piece that shows the treatments of a well developed carver’s hand. 45 3/4″ H x 56 1/4″ W x 21 1/4″ D x 16″ H to seat. Condition Report: Early aubusson with staining and blemish throughout; early gilding with losses and chipping. Old crack in one leg, not destabilizing. Sturdy and strong in joints. Antique French Giltwood Sofa c. 1870

French giltwood sofa or double end chaise c. Just over seven feet long and of strikingly unusual design with two raised ends either side of a lowered centre. Superb giltwood frame with carved floral detail to the tops of the backrests which also feature small semi circular panels with flaming torches against a silk ground. Moulded rails descending to a beautifully carved and pierced acanthus leaf centre splat and rollover arms with moulded fronts. Over a sprung seat with moulded gesso detail to the apron. Turned, carved and fluted legs front and rear with papyrus leaf detail and raised on the original brass and leather castors. Obvious split to the upholstery on the seat, otherwise very good unrestored condition with only minor damage to the gesso and original gilding.
