The outer 2 seats feature a swinging arm featuring the ability to variably turn the sofa seats inward for closer conversation, and which simultaneously exposes the underlying rear wooden countertop shelf into triangular pie shapes between the seats, for holding glasses, bottles, or drinks. Frame is in very good structural & mechanical operating condition, with only normal wear in the form of minor scratches and abrasion hear and there or at corners. It is unmistakable how well this sofa was cared for, leather is un-faded, and foam is in exceptionally good condition. The sleek shape and most unique feature of this sofa is its inward turning capability, which allows a hidden rear-shelf to appear in the form of variable pie-shaped triangles, for drink/spirit glasses and hors d’oeuvres plates, for maximum social entertaining and relaxation! This design was initially exhibited at MoMA, NYC in 1983 (The Museum of Modern Art, NY), and is featured within their Permanent Design Collection!!! In 1920 Magistretti was born in Milan, the city in which he graduated in architecture in 1945, and where his professional career has spun its story ever since, chiefly in the fields of architecture, town planning and industrial design. The first recognition of his work came in 1948, when he won the Gran Premio at the 8th Triennale. After that came almost forty years of activity with other prizes and awards in recognition of Magistrettis work in various sectors in different countries. Giving lessons and lectures in various faculties of architecture and schools of design in Italy and abroad, from Milan to New York, from Paris to London, a city to which he is particularly devoted, he has been an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Art since 1983. Around the world, the name Cassina is spontaneously associated with Italian design. Cassina SpA, the parent company was founded in 1927 in the northern Italian region of Brianza. Operations were initially focused on woodworking and gradually expanded towards modern furnishing. During the mid-50s Cassina engaged the talents of architects such as Gio Ponti, Afra and Tobia Scarpa, Mario Bellini and Vico Magistretti for design collaboration.
