With the raw, sultry, black ashen & red-highlighted original finish preserved for well nigh 200 years, this is a usable artwork that was born “alive” to be treasured & enjoyed, and has remained unspoilt by the so often overzealous hands of refinishers (restorations & new varnishes often impart a brown, glossy, cheap mass-market look that ruins the collector value forever: see such tainted pieces now on sale by others for examples of this glossy – but false – look). Quality Anglo-Indian furniture of bonafide age and pleasing form is exceptionally rare – difficult to impossible to find on the open market. Emphasis is put on “pleasing form”, as later 19th century large-format (more like couches than settees or thrones) Anglo-Indian seats do turn-up, but their rather bizarre, languid, and asymmetrical shapes (particularly to Western tastes) are of virtually no interest to collectors or, indeed, the average household, as they are, quite simply, impractical and ugly. The flip-side to that misfortune is magnificent good fortune : the good fortune of the older, truly rare & inimitable Anglo-Indian hand-carved furniture of solid rosewood – veritable masterpieces of. Geometrically-pleasing & aesthetically stunning forms – as in this show-stopping, throne-like settee. Three custom-made royal purple fine velvet cushions of the same fabric as the custom-formed seat cushion allow for endless arrangements for comfort, display, or user-preference. While truly an art piece that must be understood as a delicate artwork carving & not a utilitarian workhorse, the truth is this bench has been used on a daily basis to demonstrate its function & strength as a piece in asbolutely “ready-to-use” condition (per the condition report, above). The basis of this strength is the (naturally) nearly black ” ironwood ” – Indian Rosewood so rock-solid (like IRON), you could use it outdoors & never notice an ounce of decay, rot, or bug issues. This amazing, aromatic wood (hence, the name “rosewood” – naught to do with color) is often mistaken for ebony (another dark, pest-resistant, and rugged wood), as fake dyed-red rosewood is so prevalent today (especially on the Chinese market), people have no understanding what real rosewood actually looks like. Well, this is it! And it’s strong as nails, unscathed by nearly 200 years of life across the world, and ready to shine-on into future generations! If there is one NON-cosmetic flaw i. It is invisible when assembled with the seat, as shown, it lies in a previous owner’s flawed. Structural joining methods (glue & screw – see photo #12), but such mechanical folly can always be changed to a new owner’s taste, whereas the abovementioned stripping & refinishing of an artwork’s original surface destroys it without recourse or recovery, forever, and this has had none of that done to it.
