George Smith Chelsea make some of the finest hand made in England sofas based on traditional English designs. The sofa is made from beech wood and has a Victorian style coil sprung base and feather filled back and base cushions. The cushions are fully upholstered on both sides so should the worse happen and you stain one side you can simply flip it over. Condition wise the sofa has been professionally upholstery cleaned, there are some marks here and there, some wear to the piping, the sofa is good to go as it is however it would make a great upholstery project. Antique Couch & Chair with Carved Wood. This is an excellent matched set couch/sofa and chair. Unbelievable in its uniqueness. Reupholstered this in the early 1980s. I tied the coil springs in an eight-way tie. The cushions were rebuilt using original design. The cushions have inner coil springs on all and wrapped in cotton batting. You won’t see another one of this quality. It has hardly been used or sat upon. This has been in the family that I can document at least since the 1930s, but I do not know its actual age. Although I was told by an expert it was probably from the 1920s. If you would like more pictures, let me know. If you like quality seating then this is just about as fine as you will find anywhere. The base is coil sprung, coil springs are hand-tied eight times each, hessian padded supported and strapped, this is the traditional method of making quality sofa bases going back hundreds of years. You usually sit directly on a coil base because its so comfortable but in this instance, they have added a pair of over stuffed feather filled cushions for extra comfort, the back is lightly feather filled so you sink more than the seat, it is very very comfortable. In terms of restoration, the whole sofa has been stripped back then hand dyed this deep rich cigar brown colour, it has an amazing gentleman’s club look to it. The hide used is 100% premium heritage fully aniline leather, this type of leather is untreated and hand dyed after upholstery, the idea being a very new sofa looks like a vintage piece from day one. The leather is designed to mark so as to add to the vintage look charm and feel. Height:- 87.5cm, seat height 43cm. Depth:- 110cm frame only plus 2cm for the cushion overhang.
