The company was originally established by furniture maker George Widdicomb, father of John, after he emigrated from Devon, England to Grand Rapids, Michigan. In the years that followed it would undergo many dramatic changes, acquiring the factory capabilities of several other furniture companies and incorporating them to strengthen the John Widdicomb brand. Following the elder Widdicombs death in 1910, his son Harry became president of the John Widdicomb company. The John Widdicomb Company became a well-established purveyor of high quality furniture, and their product range evolved to suit the shifting aesthetic of their customers, incorporating new styles whilst operating from the Grand Rapids area of Michigan in the United States. During the 20th century it offered collections from designers such as Mario Buatta, Jacques Grange, T. Robsjohn-Gibbings and Frank Lloyd Wright. Offered in very good vintage condition, minor signs of use consistent with the normal, residential employment it has seen. The quality and craftsmanship speak volumes.
