FRENCH LOUIS XVI STYLE GILTWOOD CANAPE. 1900 Item # C103002. A fine work from the late 19th to early 20th century, the surface is finished in an extremely attractive and vibrant burnished gilding. The crest is intricately carved with upward sprawling acanthus leafage along the twisted rope-and-ball framing, flowing around the entire outer frame and apron of the canapé. The acanthus leafage is repeated throughout, flowing down the handholds, climbing up the arm supports, lifting the medallion back and draping from the turned legs. Each portion of the canapé is handsomely embellished. The sofa retains a later silk upholstery, this mellowed and soft to the eye from years of use, but remains in “good” condition with only minor discolorations. The entire form rests over turned and tapered legs with deep fluting terminating in ball feet. Of large and impressive dimensions, this is an incredibly striking work from an era of the very best in Louis XVI revivalism. For anyone passionate about very fine French decor, this is an outstanding acquisition – comfortable, sturdy and enjoyable, refined in every sense. 67 1/2 W x approximately 35″ D x 44 1/2″ H to crest; 17-18″ high to seat; seat depth 25 1/2″. Condition Report: Upholstery in “good” condition: several spots of discoloration (see some close ups along front edge), some light dirtiness to the fabric – overall enjoyable mellow fabric. Wear to gilt throughout, this handsomely oxidized and patinated. Vibrant gilding, mostly original with only minimal inpainting. Please review all images below for a full overview of condition. Shippensburg, PA 17257 – when you pull in, just look for our sign on the building at the far right. Because we market our collection primarily online, the building is set up for perfect humidity and temperature controls, free of almost all sunlight exposure or excessive dust. Over the past few years, the fine arts and antiques business has shifted much of the sale process for finer works to the internet. While this might seem risky for a new client, in our experience we’ve found that a carefully catalogued and clearly photographed presentation of all angles on an item is a more accurate and less distracting way to evaluate a piece than to visit it in person. Because lighting is clear and awkward angles are made comfortable, differences in oxidization become noteworthy and close ups bring out the handcrafted nature of objects. It is difficult to turn a tall chest upside down in a cramped antique store to examine for alteration, repairs and replacements but it is imperative to do so prior to purchasing! In 2013 we began including high-resolution UV photography with all newly acquired paintings, allowing you to see clearly the history of the surface: repairs, light touch ups, age of the varnish layer and loss. We have worked hard to ensure each object is catalogued thoroughly in advance so you can completely inspect what you are interested in from the comfort of your home. We offer layaway on a case by case basis with 20% down and equal payments monthly until the item is paid off. Buyers are responsible for unpacking, moving the item into their home and disposing of all packing materials without assistance from the driver. For a quote from Plycon. IN THE EVENT OF DAMAGE.
