Showing superb patina and colour, this wonderful sofa was hand upholstered in sheepskin leather in Holland by the finest craftsmen in the latter part of the 20th century. The design and craftsmanship of sheep leather furniture was perfected in Holland and spread to other countries in northern Europe. In terms of construction, the framework for sofas and chairs were initially constructed in mahogany, the preferred hard wood, and then upholstered in 100% natural sheep leather. This type of hide was carefully chosen and preferred over cow leather because of its durability and uniqueness, giving each piece a lovely rich and buttery patina. LATE 20TH CENTURY DUTCH TWO SEATER SHEEPSKIN LEATHER SOFA. By the end of the 19th century a small number of designs became classics, repeated over and over again with individual “twists” incorporated by designers and manufacturers. These subtle twists can be seen through variations in the sizes, the material selection, and even the invisible interior construction. The hand made construction and the quality of the materials renders every chair or sofa a true work of art as opposed to a simple piece of furniture. It is comfortable to sit on. This has been restored. The fabric has been replaced and the wood has been stained & touched up. The right armrest has a chip in the wood towards the back, and both armrest have small white marks on the end. A couple minor hairline cracks on outer right end of armrest. The ornate carved designs in the wood have some cracks but does not go through the wood. Shown in photo’s. Small chip on very bottom of back left leg. The front left leg has a slight curve to it. A couple light white marks on top of back rest. The seat dimensions are 47″-1/2 inches long x 23″inches deep front very front to very back x 37 inches tall. The seating depth is about 19 inches.
