Completely restored, new upholstery is genuine natural mohair with nickel nail head trim and matching bolster pillows. Empire Antique Box Sofa with Barrel Columns, 19th Century

A very interesting form, striking and angular, this Empire Box-form sofa is an interesting display of bold proportions and materials so commonly associated with the period. Crafted during the last quarter of the 19th century, probably in America but possibly England, the sofa clearly lends to the taste of the Victorian period though with a simplicity of form that is most attractive. The arms are supported by oversized barrel columns with ring turned capitals over intricately turned feet, an architectural statement that raises the level surface of the arms and back most dramatically. The upholstery is in decent condition, but a brighter neutral covering would be most striking against the dark wood surfaces of the sofa. It is an unusual piece that will lend great visual interest to any room it becomes a part of. Measurements: 71 W x 31 3/4 D x 26 H. Also previous owners over the years may have changed parts etc. So don’t expect antiques or used parts to be in mint condition. Recent upholstery is silky soft velvet, and includes matching bolsters. There are minor scuffs and spots that are difficult to see on the “changeable” velvet. The old finish is in very fine condition on this American made antique furniture. Cast solid brass wheels and paw feet are original. The frame is tight and strong, springs are comfortable.
