READ ABOUT OUR GALLERY. AN EXCEPTIONAL GEORGE III PERIOD PAINTED CANAPE. England, circa 1780 Item # 703PIA20S. A simply exquisite canapé from the last quarter of the 18th century during the height of the George III period, the piece remains in very fine original condition throughout. Retaining many layers of very early paint, the natural wear through layers of refreshed pigment result in a chaotic and most interesting surface. The molded crest rail curves in a gentle serpentine and rounds the shoulders into upholstered arms and reeded hand holds. Curving supports raise the arms with a sharp twisting over carved lotus flower rosettes. These highlight the start of each front leg, between which a vertical fluting repeats around the entire skirt. Most striking are the sharp and angular tapered legs with their fluted profile over squared feet. Despite nearly two and a half centuries of life, the work remains unusually comfortable and practical for regular use in the home. 38 1/2 H x 76 W x approx. 25 D x approx. 21 H to seat. Condition Report: Upholstery in “good” condition with several small stains along the back; upholstery has not been removed to examine understructure. Early painted surface with several layers of paint, heavily distressed. One handhold with several holes and an old goudge. Very sturdy, strong and comfortable.
