A very good looking and well made piece, the carving is very much in the Gothic style, the back removes as you can see converting this from a comfortable two seat bench settee into a very style bluster armchair window seat or chaise. The upholstery has been professionally cleaned and is in good order, the wood work clean waxed repaired and polished. There will be normal patina marks from honest age and genuine use. Height:- 94cm top to bottom, 72cm to the top of the arms only. Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point, if you would like any additional or specific measurements please ask. This piece is part of a suite, I have the matching pair of armchairs listed under my other items. A very rare well made and decorative piece of furniture. Turkey work is a form of knotted embroidery practiced in England from the 16th century to the mid-18th century, but especially in the 17th century. Used for upholstery and table covers, it was worked in imitation of Turkish carpets, which are known from paintings to have been imported to England from the 16th century. The designs were usually of geometrically stylized flowers. A document from the reign of William III (16891702) gives the number of Turkey-work chairs made per annum as 60,000. Because so few examples have survived in England, while examples have been found abroad for example, in Italy it may be deduced that Turkey work was an export item. As you can see the upholstery is period and distressed, it can be restored as there is limited missing fabric, its mainly just straight line splits, I have a pair of cushions which can be used for donor fabric if needed. The model of the seat itself is sublime, it is a bluster arm daybed, very deep for its type so its a two person daybed, the legs are naturally solid to the frame, ebonised black as was the fashion. Plump deep upholstered bench setting in white cotton muslin fabric would look nice with added pillows, or recover to give it an entire different look. Supported by heavy cabriole legs with scroll feet, one solid frame. Ornately carved motif on the apron as well, this is an older reproduction piece handcrafted and imported. Great piece as a Sofa, so versatile you can use it anywhere in your home. Condition Very stable and heavy duty has some scratches and wear on the surface of some of the painted areas by the arm rest and worn on the base of the feet, resulting a slight unevenness to the foot (see photo), fabric needs cleaning before use, some imperfection on material which is a natural cotton muslin.
