A rare sculptural loveseat / Settee designed by Grete Jalk For France & Son, circa 1960s. The solid teak frame is beautifully sculpted. This piece has great lines and is very comfortable and offers generous solid teak armrests! Fully marked with the France & Son disc and marks by John Stuart, A high end american importer. These tend to be harder to obtain and they sell quickly. We reupholstered this piece in a black Maharam metric over the original spring loaded cushions. This piece is made in extremely high quality and was constructed at the top of the danish market in the 1960s. Plays well in almost any space or home. Condition report: Near mint condition. New Fabric and foam over the original spring loaded cushions. The wood is in near perfect condition and the finish is in outstanding shape. France and Sons / John Stuart tags intact beneath. A few small stains below the cushions on the canvas, otherwise absolute mint. At Mid Century Sacramento, we source, restore, and carefully curate iconic 20th century/mid century modern designs to time capsule condition. We view good furniture design as the same as functional art and our goal is to put that art into your hands. Our services include staging, restoration, and reupholstery services. As you can see this needs the full works, there are old frame repairs, a couple of the front legs need a little alignment tweak, the upholstery is worn in the hard wearing areas, the cushion is solid and sound, you have the original horse hair padding, the base would have been rewebbed at some point and thats in perfect order, its actually not that big of a project and there is allot of profit on the back end for the right person. Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point, if you would like any additional or specific measurements please ask. The name of Howard and Sons is probably one of the best known and highly sought after names in Upholstered furniture. Over the next few paragraphs I will do my best to give you a brief history of the company. The company was started by John Howard in 1820 trading from 24 Leman St, London as a Cabinet Maker. Over the next 25 years they would make several changes of premises within the Whitechapel area. First to 27 Great Alie St (Now just Alie St) before moving a short distance to 34 Great Alie St. In 1844 the company made its first venture into upholstered furniture by opening a showroom/workshop at 36 Red lion St. This was also to be a big move towards what would be their next and most famous location. In 1848 they moved to a new address much more accustomed with the name; Berners St. London as Cabinet Maker, Upholsterer and Decorator under the name John Howard and Sons. The business seemed to boom at this location with workshops opening up at Tottenham St, Charlotte Mews and Fitzroy Sq and an expansion to a second Berners St building in 1853. In 1869 the company consolidated its many workshops into the one building on Cleveland St. By 1872 the company was occupying 25, 26 and 27 Berners St. These adresses would remain unchanged until 1935. During this period they became a limited company in 1899 and won the first of their Royal warrants in 1901. In 1935 the the well established decorators Lenygon and Morant appear to take over the name with the business address being given as 31 Old Burlington St (Lenygon and Morants premesis since 1909). Lenygon and Morant later moved to South Audley St where from 1954 they advertised as’Makers of Howard Chairs and Sofas’. In 1967 the owners of Lenygon and Morant open Howard Chairs Limited, the company operating from Lyme St continue to make high quality sofas and armchairs. Exhibitions and Important Houses. At the 1862 International Exhibition (The 3rd World Expo) Howard and Sons entered a suite of library furniture for which they won a prize. They also went on to exhibit at the Paris World’s Fair, called an Exposition Universelle twice; once in 1878 and again in 1900. Also at the Exposition Internationale d’Anvers 1894 (International Exposition/World Fair Antwerp). Winning Prizes at them all including 1 silver and 2 golds. They also employed their eclectic styles working for many important clients providing furniture for important houses such as Sudbury Hall in Derbyshire, Elton Hall, Huntingdonshire and Stokesay Court, Shropshire. I have the matching armchair listed under my other items with very rare original embroidered upholstery depicting birds and flowers. This and the matching armchair are the first Claw & Ball Howard & Son’s I’ve ever owned, they were custom orders and significantly more expensive than the standard leg options. The sofa as you can see has been professionally stripped and is ready for upholstery, the frame retains all the original features, the horse hair padding, the feather filled cushions, the original coil springs, everything you would hope to find. I can have the sofa upholstered for the trade price in either of the three Howard Ticking fabric colours or the original Howard floral and striped upholstery, I can also have the timber washed back and French polished, for a quote please ask. I can also have the sofa upholstered in premium cattle hide leather and hand dyed a wonderful brown colour, again please ask for a price. This sofa is a must have for any fine English furniture connoisseur, it screams country house style charm and charisma. The sofa seats as pretty much the most comfortable sofa I have ever sat on, the seat platform is exactly as you would hope to find which is to say it sinks a little from well over a century of use, the feathers in the cushions also naturally compress when you sit down, these “imperfections” make the sofa perfect to sit in, I have made the mistake before of restoring the perfect seat and it was totally ruined for me. The inside back left leg is fully stamped with Howard & Son’s Berner street, and then the serial number. Howard & Sons are simply put the finest chair makers in history, the Queen even has a private collection. Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point, if you would like any additional or specific measurements please ask. A History of Howard and Sons. Very Rare Holland and Sons Victorian Conversation Couch / Settee (From London)

Very Rare Holland and Sons Victorian Conversation Couch / Settee. NOTE: Reasonable offers accepted. This Settee came to us from an Aunt who was a traveling performer and acquired it from a London hotel in the 1980s. We do not know the exact age. Each of the three legs are stamped with Holland & Sons. It is a lovely purple velvet. Note there are some stains which one would expect from a hotel piece. There are no visible tears, but two buttons are missing from the arm / back rest. One leg had broken and I repaired it as well as replaced the dust cover on the bottom. I have the original fabric from the original dust cover and will send it with the settee. The fabric and springs are in good condition. Keep it as is to retain its antiqueness or have it re-upholstered for an exceptional piece. Ive tried to show the fabric and color accurately but thats very difficult for velvet and digital photography. I recommend an on-site inspection. Approximate Dimensions: 48 inches across. The seat is 16 inches from the floor with the top of the back / arm rest being 28.5 inches tall. Settee Weight: 85 lbs. Information Below Excerpted from Antiques World website. Holland and Sons Antique Furniture (1803 1942). Holland and sons were extremely good cabinet makers and they specialised in fine quality furniture. This English furniture making firm was founded in 1803 by William Holland and by the middle of 1800s, Holland and sons was one of the main competitions to the furniture makers Gillows, one of the greatest English furniture producers in History. Original they were cabinet makers and upholsterers called Taprelland Holland but by 1843 they changed to Holland and Sons with William Holland in control, a relative of the well known Regency architect Henry Holland. The business soon started to expand quickly and by1851 they employed over 350 cabinet makers and by 1852 took on the prestigious firm of Thomas Dowbiggin of 23 Mount Street, London, who had previously made the state throne for Victorias Coronation. Holland and Sons worked successfully not only as furniture makers but also as undertakers and became responsible for the Duke of Wellingtons funeral. William Holland has the firm expanding at a rapid rate and became so well known for its quality in cabinet making, they became cabinetmakers and upholsters to the Queen. Their first commission was for Osborne House in 1845, supplying furniture in the Queens favourite style of the time, the Louis XVI style from France. They continued to supply furniture for Osborne and gained further commissions for Windsor Castle, Balmoral and Marlborough House. Holland and sons also worked for many leading institutions such as the reform Club (we have also supplied the reform club with our antique furniture in the past), the British Museum and the new Houses of Parliament. They were part of many of the important international Exhibitions including London in 1862, Vienna in 1873 and Paris in 1867 and 1872. They gained worldwide fame for their magnificent designs and super quality in cabinetmaking right throughout the Victorian era. Holland and sons stayed as a family run business but sadly closed in 1942 when it fell on hard times due to the ever changing world of the time. FRENCH LOUIS XV STYLE SETTEE W/ ORIGINAL AUBUSSON UPHOLSTERY. Retaining original label Ameublement – Decoration / Belzaco et res Gendres, late 19th Century Item # 1407OYD27Z. A small and original retailing plaque is affixed beneath this settee attributing the craftsmanship to the firm of Belzaco & Sons-in-Law. The firm of A. Perrichet & Belzaco is noted in a full page ad in Frances Annuaire de LArmée Française of 1897 as being founded in 1834 and being in the business of retailing furniture at 4 et 6, Rue de la Pépiniére, Paris. The settee remains in exceptional condition and still retains it’s original hand stitched Aubusson upholstery. The scene is a work of art, the back capturing a pair of Peacocks and a pair of Ducks in a meadow framed in a border of swirling foliage and acanthus while the seat depicts a wolf dressed in a Shepherd’s clothing as he creeps up on lambs at rest in the pasture. While the textile has darkened with time and dirt and numerous areas have lost their weave, the overall fabric remains stable and in outstanding condition for it’s age. The settee is a fine piece of craftsmanship, the molded frame crested by a demilune display of flowers with gilt highlights, the surfaces throughout with traces of polychromed red and gold wash over patinated mahogany. The legs are joined with pinned tenon mortise construction, resulting in a very sturdy and stable seating piece despite well over a century of enjoyment. The legs are carved carefully with the typical display of flowers among acanthus leafage and terminating in scrolling toes. For anyone passionate about the Louis XV form, this is an exceptional investment grade piece you will cherish in your collection for a lifetime. 25 1/8″ D x 63 1/2″ W x 38 1/4″ H; 17″ H to seat. Condition Report: Original aubusson, worn and discolored with threadbare areas and loose threads – however, the covering is stable and incredibly attractive.
