Empire style, mahogany veneer couch, black horsehair! Original fabric, but the back looks recovered. Must move it yourself, either personally or by a moving company, but only if you arrange and pay for the entire move – I can make sure that either myself or one of my roommates is here to oversee the moving company. But if you move it yourself, then you will need help, 2 people at least. However I have an elevator! No defects on fabric, no mold, underneath and back of couch clean and the fabric is perfect, see the photos… See the two couch arms? Compare them, one is missing the tiny little tip, that is the worst part of the couch and that isn’t even noticeable really. Fantastic dark Gothic Victorian empire couch. Very Rare Victorian Howard & Sons Fully Restored Brown Leather Chesterfield Sofa

There are around 50-100 high definition super-sized pictures at the bottom of this page. I have a Howard and Son’s armchair listed under my other items that has just been restored to the same standard. This sofa has been on a journey, as you can see from the pre-restoration pictures it came to me with a rather distressed period upholstery on it. The back leg is stamped with the serial number, the castors are stamped Howard & Son’s, its very faded in places. The sofa has been fully restored as you can see, its been reupholstered by a third generation Victorian upholsterer and then hand dyed this lovely tobacco brown colour by my leather polishers, simply put this sofa is the finest example you will find anywhere today. Howard & Sons are simply put are the finest son and armchair makers in history, the Queen even has a private collection. Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point, if you would like any additional or specific measurements please ask. A History of Howard and Sons. The name of Howard and Sons is probably one of the best known and highly sought after names in Upholstered furniture. Over the next few paragraphs I will do my best to give you a brief history of the company. The company was started by John Howard in 1820 trading from 24 Leman St, London as a Cabinet Maker. Over the next 25 years they would make several changes of premises within the Whitechapel area. First to 27 Great Alie St (Now just Alie St) before moving a short distance to 34 Great Alie St. In 1844 the company made its first venture into upholstered furniture by opening a showroom/workshop at 36 Red lion St. This was also to be a big move towards what would be their next and most famous location. In 1848 they moved to a new address much more accustomed with the name; Berners St. London as Cabinet Maker, Upholsterer and Decorator under the name John Howard and Sons. The business seemed to boom at this location with workshops opening up at Tottenham St, Charlotte Mews and Fitzroy Sq and an expansion to a second Berners St building in 1853. In 1869 the company consolidated its many workshops into the one building on Cleveland St. By 1872 the company was occupying 25, 26 and 27 Berners St. These adresses would remain unchanged until 1935. During this period they became a limited company in 1899 and won the first of their Royal warrants in 1901. In 1935 the the well established decorators Lenygon and Morant appear to take over the name with the business address being given as 31 Old Burlington St (Lenygon and Morants premesis since 1909). Lenygon and Morant later moved to South Audley St where from 1954 they advertised as’Makers of Howard Chairs and Sofas’. In 1967 the owners of Lenygon and Morant open Howard Chairs Limited, the company operating from Lyme St continue to make high quality sofas and armchairs. Exhibitions and Important Houses. At the 1862 International Exhibition (The 3rd World Expo) Howard and Sons entered a suite of library furniture for which they won a prize. They also went on to exhibit at the Paris World’s Fair, called an Exposition Universelle twice; once in 1878 and again in 1900. Also at the Exposition Internationale d’Anvers 1894 (International Exposition/World Fair Antwerp). Winning Prizes at them all including 1 silver and 2 golds. They also employed their eclectic styles working for many important clients providing furniture for important houses such as Sudbury Hall in Derbyshire, Elton Hall, Huntingdonshire and Stokesay Court, Shropshire. Very Rare Holland and Sons Victorian Conversation Couch / Settee (From London)

Very Rare Holland and Sons Victorian Conversation Couch / Settee. NOTE: Reasonable offers accepted. This Settee came to us from an Aunt who was a traveling performer and acquired it from a London hotel in the 1980s. We do not know the exact age. Each of the three legs are stamped with Holland & Sons. It is a lovely purple velvet. Note there are some stains which one would expect from a hotel piece. There are no visible tears, but two buttons are missing from the arm / back rest. One leg had broken and I repaired it as well as replaced the dust cover on the bottom. I have the original fabric from the original dust cover and will send it with the settee. The fabric and springs are in good condition. Keep it as is to retain its antiqueness or have it re-upholstered for an exceptional piece. Ive tried to show the fabric and color accurately but thats very difficult for velvet and digital photography. I recommend an on-site inspection. Approximate Dimensions: 48 inches across. The seat is 16 inches from the floor with the top of the back / arm rest being 28.5 inches tall. Settee Weight: 85 lbs. Information Below Excerpted from Antiques World website. Holland and Sons Antique Furniture (1803 1942). Holland and sons were extremely good cabinet makers and they specialised in fine quality furniture. This English furniture making firm was founded in 1803 by William Holland and by the middle of 1800s, Holland and sons was one of the main competitions to the furniture makers Gillows, one of the greatest English furniture producers in History. Original they were cabinet makers and upholsterers called Taprelland Holland but by 1843 they changed to Holland and Sons with William Holland in control, a relative of the well known Regency architect Henry Holland. The business soon started to expand quickly and by1851 they employed over 350 cabinet makers and by 1852 took on the prestigious firm of Thomas Dowbiggin of 23 Mount Street, London, who had previously made the state throne for Victorias Coronation. Holland and Sons worked successfully not only as furniture makers but also as undertakers and became responsible for the Duke of Wellingtons funeral. William Holland has the firm expanding at a rapid rate and became so well known for its quality in cabinet making, they became cabinetmakers and upholsters to the Queen. Their first commission was for Osborne House in 1845, supplying furniture in the Queens favourite style of the time, the Louis XVI style from France. They continued to supply furniture for Osborne and gained further commissions for Windsor Castle, Balmoral and Marlborough House. Holland and sons also worked for many leading institutions such as the reform Club (we have also supplied the reform club with our antique furniture in the past), the British Museum and the new Houses of Parliament. They were part of many of the important international Exhibitions including London in 1862, Vienna in 1873 and Paris in 1867 and 1872. They gained worldwide fame for their magnificent designs and super quality in cabinetmaking right throughout the Victorian era. Holland and sons stayed as a family run business but sadly closed in 1942 when it fell on hard times due to the ever changing world of the time. FRENCH LOUIS XVI STYLE GILTWOOD CANAPE. 1900 Item # C103002. A fine work from the late 19th to early 20th century, the surface is finished in an extremely attractive and vibrant burnished gilding. The crest is intricately carved with upward sprawling acanthus leafage along the twisted rope-and-ball framing, flowing around the entire outer frame and apron of the canapé. The acanthus leafage is repeated throughout, flowing down the handholds, climbing up the arm supports, lifting the medallion back and draping from the turned legs. Each portion of the canapé is handsomely embellished. The sofa retains a later silk upholstery, this mellowed and soft to the eye from years of use, but remains in “good” condition with only minor discolorations. The entire form rests over turned and tapered legs with deep fluting terminating in ball feet. Of large and impressive dimensions, this is an incredibly striking work from an era of the very best in Louis XVI revivalism. For anyone passionate about very fine French decor, this is an outstanding acquisition – comfortable, sturdy and enjoyable, refined in every sense. 67 1/2 W x approximately 35″ D x 44 1/2″ H to crest; 17-18″ high to seat; seat depth 25 1/2″. Condition Report: Upholstery in “good” condition: several spots of discoloration (see some close ups along front edge), some light dirtiness to the fabric – overall enjoyable mellow fabric. Wear to gilt throughout, this handsomely oxidized and patinated. Vibrant gilding, mostly original with only minimal inpainting. Please review all images below for a full overview of condition. Established in 2009, Silla Fine Antiques is owned and operated by Andrew and Grace Silla with their small team in a 4800 sq. Private gallery in Shippensburg, PA. Large collection of fine art and furniture from the eighteenth through twentieth centuries is selected for it’s form, aesthetic excellence, purity of structure and overall fine condition – they are objects that have always been valued and cared for. With a specialization in French furnishings from the Louis XV period through the Bell Epoqué and bronze sculpture from 1860 through 1930, hundreds of carefully documented pieces are always available in the shop. French bronze sculpture is a passion and each piece is curated for it. S moving subject matter, perfect foundry work and chiseling detail, and the degree to which the work is a photographic representation of it. Additionally, a large collection of fine period English and American furniture of the late 18th and early 19th centuries is also on display. Most items in the shop are fully catalogued and can be viewed by clicking here. We welcome your visit at our shop! All visits are by appointment but for the most part we are always in the shop Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9a-5:30p with visits on Monday/Friday and weekends by appointment. Conveniently located close to the turnpike, the building is just 7 miles off of Route 76s Blue Mountain exit. At the junction of Weaver Rd. And Roxbury Rd at 5704 Roxbury Rd. Shippensburg, PA 17257 – when you pull in, just look for our sign on the building at the far right. Because we market our collection primarily online, the building is set up for perfect humidity and temperature controls, free of almost all sunlight exposure or excessive dust. Over the past few years, the fine arts and antiques business has shifted much of the sale process for finer works to the internet. While this might seem risky for a new client, in our experience we’ve found that a carefully catalogued and clearly photographed presentation of all angles on an item is a more accurate and less distracting way to evaluate a piece than to visit it in person. Because lighting is clear and awkward angles are made comfortable, differences in oxidization become noteworthy and close ups bring out the handcrafted nature of objects. It is difficult to turn a tall chest upside down in a cramped antique store to examine for alteration, repairs and replacements but it is imperative to do so prior to purchasing! In 2013 we began including high-resolution UV photography with all newly acquired paintings, allowing you to see clearly the history of the surface: repairs, light touch ups, age of the varnish layer and loss. We have worked hard to ensure each object is catalogued thoroughly in advance so you can completely inspect what you are interested in from the comfort of your home. We offer layaway on a case by case basis with 20% down and equal payments monthly until the item is paid off. Buyers are responsible for unpacking, moving the item into their home and disposing of all packing materials without assistance from the driver. For a quote from Plycon. IN THE EVENT OF DAMAGE.
