LOUIS XVI STYLE CARVED GILTWOOD SETTEE. Circa late 20th century Item # 702VKT11. An opulent French Louis XVI settee with sumptuous wood carving clad in dramatic gilt, and upholstery of jacquard in red with a tight attached back and generous, overstuffed welted cushions. The entire frame is braced by a trim of carved ribbon revolving concentrically around a pole, and the gilt here is enhanced by layers of wax that help define the depth and complexity of the wood carving. A number of traditional elements were incorporated in the carved embellishments, with authentic motifs that are so striking on Louis XVI furniture. The crest of the sofa has detailed triumphal gilt carving, meticulously done, of a ribbon tied into a grand quivering bow, with larger layered leaves extending across part of the top rail. The top wood frame curves carefully down to upholstered arms. The padded arm rests abut acanthus leaf hand rests and descend further by delicate ribbing to larger acanthus leaves at the bottom rail. Each of the settees front legs rest on a floral capital over a fluted columnar leg and hipped amphora-shaped feet. We also have a pair of matching arm chairs that may still be available in our shop inventory. 42 1/8 H x approx. 70 1/2 W x 24 1/4 D x 18 H to seat. Condition Report: Proper right shoulder joint not flush, though still very sturdy. Light wear to gilding. Upholstery in excellent condition. Sturdy, strong and very comfortable.
