Adrian Pearsall gondola sofa with walnut trim, elegantly designed with boomerang front legs and peg back legs. The walnut is in perfect condition, with no scratches or dings, although one of the back legs is slightly loose. Reupholstered in 2007 with a green microsuede. Overall, the piece is comfortable and in wonderful condition.

Adrian Pealsall mid century modern / atomic era sofa or couch featuring traditional gondola form with the original peach and tufted floral fabric. 1925 was an architect turned furniture designer, and life long creator whose pieces embodied Atomic Age design. From small beginnings, Pearsall was born in New York, joined the US Navy at age 17, and graduated from the University of Illinois in 1950 with a degree in Architectural Engineering. In 1952, he created his manufacturing brand Craft Associates with his wife and brother, and thus began his foray into furniture design. Pearsall’s pieces were soon sought after, and his use of walnut wood became hugely popular in the late 1950s. Pearsall is also credited with creation of the low gondola sofa and the popularization of the beanbag chair. Pearsall’s designs were coveted by consumers in the’50s and’60s due to the high-style flair the pieces of his collection made available to the public. He used materials, bold shapes and color combinations never before seen by the mass market. Pearsall’s confident knowledge of what shapes and textiles would work in his designs set him apart from other furniture manufacturers of the time, and Craft Associates went on to be one of the 1950s’ most prominent furniture designers. Many attribute his bold design choices to his background as an architect. Pearsall’s most notable project was the redesign of his family’s home in Pennsylvania, dubbed the Forty Fort. The architectural marvel was floor-to-ceiling designed by Pearsall himself, as were the furnishings within. At Comfort Designs, Pearsall continued to make furniture that many admired for years. A man who always worked with meticulous craftsmanship, Pearsall eventually moved from furniture creation to yacht restoration later in life. A 1950s La Gondola Sofa designed by Edward Wormley for Dunbar. This sofa with a solid mahogany bracket back, exaggerated curved arms, and floating open back is a true masterwork. The cushion with raised ends to mimic the shape of the back, is accentuated with yellow goat skin buttons and piping. The light blue Belgian linen lends a luxurious touch. Retains a portion of its original Dunbar decking. A unique sofa that very rarely becomes available. This sofa would compliment designs by TH Robsjohn Gibbings, Tommi Parzinger, Harvey Probber and Vladimir Kagan. 84″ wide x 30″ deep x 31.25″ high 18″ seat height.
