FRENCH LOUIS XV STYLE CARVED GILTWOOD SETTEE. Circa 1900 with original gilding and crisp carvings Item # 801DMT27P. A gorgeous and sleek settee of fine quality with crisp carvings and an excellent profile, this is an excellent strikepoint piece for the salon or living rooms. Each grouping of carved motifs is centered around the naturalism of acanthus and foliage, the crest a most impressive display replete with an inset rocaille surmounted by flowers and furls of leafage. The open arm form eliminates even a hint of bulk, allowing the form to remain breezy and light with undulating curves that follow the seat back into the outward splayed arms and finally into the cabriole legs terminating in scrolled french toes. It is an absolutely gorgeous piece – we may still have two additional pairs of matching arm chairs available in the shop. 50 ” W x 23 1/8 ” D x 38 1/4 ” H, 15 ” H to seat. Condition Report: Early upholstery in poor condition: springs need to be retied, fabric is stained and with holes. Original gilding with wear throughout. Elegant Laquered wooden sofa resting on 4 fluted legs. The front of the sofa is interspersed with finely carves. Provence late 18th/early 19th century. Original Horse hair upholstery. Condition: The silk upholstery is worn and stained due to its age and use. Please check images for condition. The upholstery is Original, filled with horse hair and is %100 Silk. A Gillows Mahogany Window Seat circa 1840. With delicately carved detail above the turned legs and scroll ended arms. In excellent condition and beautiful colour. A rare example of Gillows furniture. Lancaster and London; cabinet makers and upholsterers fl. The name’Gillow’ has been associated with furniture making from the 1730s until the end of the 20th century. When Thomas Pennant visited Lancaster in 1772 he observed that some’ingenious cabinet-makers’ worked in the town who made’excellent and neat goods at remarkably cheap rates for export to London and the plantations’. He added approvingly;’Mr. Gillow’s warehouse of these manufactures merits a visit’. In 1807 Thomas Clarke wrote that the firm’s’extensive ware-rooms, stored with every article of useful and ornamental mahogany furniture are. Said to be the best stocked of any in this line, out of the metropolis’. Gillows were also overseas merchants. Their import /export trade included West Indian sugar, cotton, and spirits, as well as exotic hardwoods, and they enjoyed a worthwhile export trade in furniture to both the West Indies and the ports of northern Europe. Although the active participation of the Gillow family ceased in the early 19th century, subsequent partners continued to use the Gillow name. 1813 they retained the name Gillow & Co. And succeeding partnerships such as Waring & Gillow Ltd. (founded 1897), and Waring & Gillow (1932) Ltd. Incorporated the name until its closure at the end of the 20th century. The firm was originally based in Lancaster though a London branch was established in Oxford Street in 1769. The Gillow archives, though incomplete, are the largest and most comprehensive cabinetmaker’s records to have survived in the world. They consist mainly of the firm’s Lancaster records but a few London records have also survived. All are now in Westminster Archive Centre, London. ART DECO WORN AND PATINATED LEATHER SOFA, CONVERTIBLE INTO BED. France, circa 1930s; all original leather and hardware Item # 206JXP29P. Retaining all original leather, hardware and fabrics, this untouched 1930s sofa from the Art Deco era is a clever design that hides within its frame a mattress and fold-out mechanism. We have left it in exactly the same state it has been in for the last nearly 100 years, other than some minor maintenance repairs to the interior mechanism completed after the photographs were taken. Incredibly heavy and sturdy, this was built to last the test of time. The leather is a worn cognac color with surface variation and discolorations throughout. A very nice find for the “club” setting. Measurements: 36″ H x 34″ D x 70″ W; 18″ approx. Height to seat; mattress area 72 1/2″ D from front of mattress frame to back of the sofa x 55 1/4″ W inside frame. Condition Report: In as-found condition with original leather and hardware; ticking to the leather in a number of areas [likely from a cat] with significant discoloration throughout; no mattress; requires some upholstery work to have a mattress made, the older worn-out fabrics replaced and the springs tied again (seat is a bit lumpy); sturdy and very strong.
