This is a gorgeous piece of antique furniture, manufactured at the end of the 19th century. This fainting couch is done is the American Victorian Eastlake Style, which was highly popular during the last two decades of the 1800s. It was one of the first items factory made and epoused every one of Charles Eastlake ideals on home decor during this transitional period in American taste. This piece features green cotton velvet upholstery with silky green serpentine trim, and pierced urn style dentil cornice molding framed by a mix of inlaid and applied geometric relief carvings, inset burled walnut panels, scrolls, and floral motif carvings. The scrolled and curved frame of this item made it an ideal resting spot for “hysterical” women. The gently curved frame features a perimeter of burled walnut, with unique legs displaying delicate serpentine molding that appears to be draped over the turned and tapered, rounded and flared hoof-style feet. Two of the legs are on casters, one of which has been recently replaced. All the upholstery is original. There are some signs of wear to the fabric, per usual with this type and its age. There are also signs of wear to the wood and the back of the couch. The springs and stuffing of the piece are actually still in very good condition and can take an average-sized person’s weight easily. It measures 40″ high, 75″ wide, and 29 deep.
