FRENCH LOUIS XV STYLE CARVED GILTWOOD SETTEE. With early aubusson upholstery, circa 1900 Item # 705IJT14L. A most fine settee in the Louis XV taste from the turn of the century, this is a statement of rich form and material. Sumptuous curves are highlighted with the most crisp of carvings, these lively Rococo motifs centering around the Rocaille with vivid shell forms along the apron. The scrolled toes have a delightful ribbing that simulates the exterior of a shell, the flowing acanthus forms wrapping around the knee embellishments like waves in the seas. The chair back frame is quite restrained, the rail mostly plain with only brief foliate highlights, allowing the gorgeous crest carving to be fully on display: a well developed swirl of acanthus around a kidney-like shape flanked by flowers along the slight cove molding of the rail. A hand-stitched aubusson covering with flowing displays of foliage around beautiful florals remains in rather good condition, a very early and incredibly time consuming covering to complete. For the passionate collector of fine French furnishings, this is a most excellent settee with vibrant surfaces, crisp craftsmanship and handsome proportions. 59 1/8 W x 24 3/8 D x 39 7/8 H, 16 H to seat. Condition Report: Some worn holes in aubusson as well as stitching separations; discolorations and staining to edges of upholstery, particularly the proper right side and extensive staining to the back side of the settee. Mostly original gilding with some areas of touch up, wear and loss as expected, more notable to high relief areas. Minor joint separations, but very strong and sturdy.
