Collin & Hayes rarely make sofa beds but when they do they are something special like this one. A quick rundown of what you have is as follows, the leather is fully aniline, what that means is the sofa is upholstered in raw 100% cattle hide untreated leather, its then hand dyed to order as per the customers specification. Fully aniline leather is untreated so it shows the natural patina meaning that a brand new piece already has a certain vintage look and feel, you see lots of companies trying to manufacture this look through distressed effects but the only way to achieve it is honestly using the right hide. The bed is the highest standard you will ever find, firstly the frame is slatted like a normal quality bed, most others have a kind of sling and if two share you sink into each other in the middle, the mattress is a genuine pocket coil sprung mattress, again much like normal mattresses, Laura Ashley for example just use a piece of cut foam, this mattress is twice the thickness of those and five times heavier. The bed is what I class as a one arm mechanism, you can pull the whole thing out with one arm and it unfolds as you do. Lastly its around 7cm wider than pretty much all other sofabed mattresses, it doesn’t sound like allot but trust me it makes the world of difference when two are sharing. If you have a look at the sofa minus the cushions youll see theyve even made leather flaps for the front and sides so theres no gaps for dust etc to fall into the bed section, no other company does this. The back cushions are deep feather filled, all cushions have vent holes at the back so they stay nice and plump, the bedframe is a one arm easy in and out action that requires no strength, all in all this is one of the nicest sofa beds youll ever see or use. Condition wise we have deep cleaned hand condition waxed and hand polished it from top to bottom, it does have some marks from normal use, mostly they just add to the vintage look and feel, I have taken around 50 pictures below so you can see the condition from every single angle and you can judge for yourself. Height:- 75cm from the floor to the top of the sofa back, 88cm to the top of the cushion. Width:- 139.5cm. Depth:- 188.5cm. Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point, if you would like any additional or specific measurements please ask. There are around 50-100 high definition super-sized pictures at the bottom of this page. This piece is just about as sculptural a sofa as you will every find, the front line is serpentine curved, each back rail would normally be basic turned wood, in this case they are hand turned with exquisite detailing, the larger sections look almost musical, like harps. The leather hide is thick English cattle grade, its chesterfield buttoned from head to toe and hand antique studded in place using traditional furniture methods. The frame is a mixture of brown oak and mahogany. The beautifully sculpted legs are elegant from every angle and finished nicely with Victorian porcelain castors. The bench has been fully restored to include having the frame checked, the leather has been hand dyed this beautiful whisky brown colour. Depth:- 74.5cm. Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point, if you would like any additional or specific measurements please ask. This item is available for collection from our Wimbledon warehouses SW19-3BE, we can have it delivered nationwide to include Scotland Wales and Ireland. There are around 50-100 high definition super-sized pictures at the bottom of this page. Personally I see this as a reupholstery project, the current upholstery is fine and perfectly usable as you can see, it will have the odd light mark and a bit of discolouration in the hard wearing areas but mostly for the period its very good, however upholstered in leather and hand dyed you would have a very desirable and valuable suite. The frames are structurally sound, the base platform a traditional Victorian coil sprung affair, the original hessian base covers are in tack, the upholstery is samon pink velour. The only point on condition is there are some small looses to the timber panels here and there, I can have said losses replaced for cost price. Height:- 81.5cm. Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point, if you would like any additional or specific measurements please ask. There are around 50-100 high definition super-sized pictures at the bottom of this page. I have a Howard and Son’s armchair listed under my other items that has just been restored to the same standard. This sofa has been on a journey, as you can see from the pre-restoration pictures it came to me with a rather distressed period upholstery on it. The back leg is stamped with the serial number, the castors are stamped Howard & Son’s, its very faded in places. The sofa has been fully restored as you can see, its been reupholstered by a third generation Victorian upholsterer and then hand dyed this lovely tobacco brown colour by my leather polishers, simply put this sofa is the finest example you will find anywhere today. Howard & Sons are simply put are the finest son and armchair makers in history, the Queen even has a private collection. Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point, if you would like any additional or specific measurements please ask. A History of Howard and Sons. The name of Howard and Sons is probably one of the best known and highly sought after names in Upholstered furniture. Over the next few paragraphs I will do my best to give you a brief history of the company. The company was started by John Howard in 1820 trading from 24 Leman St, London as a Cabinet Maker. Over the next 25 years they would make several changes of premises within the Whitechapel area. First to 27 Great Alie St (Now just Alie St) before moving a short distance to 34 Great Alie St. In 1844 the company made its first venture into upholstered furniture by opening a showroom/workshop at 36 Red lion St. This was also to be a big move towards what would be their next and most famous location. In 1848 they moved to a new address much more accustomed with the name; Berners St. London as Cabinet Maker, Upholsterer and Decorator under the name John Howard and Sons. The business seemed to boom at this location with workshops opening up at Tottenham St, Charlotte Mews and Fitzroy Sq and an expansion to a second Berners St building in 1853. In 1869 the company consolidated its many workshops into the one building on Cleveland St. By 1872 the company was occupying 25, 26 and 27 Berners St. These adresses would remain unchanged until 1935. During this period they became a limited company in 1899 and won the first of their Royal warrants in 1901. In 1935 the the well established decorators Lenygon and Morant appear to take over the name with the business address being given as 31 Old Burlington St (Lenygon and Morants premesis since 1909). Lenygon and Morant later moved to South Audley St where from 1954 they advertised as’Makers of Howard Chairs and Sofas’. In 1967 the owners of Lenygon and Morant open Howard Chairs Limited, the company operating from Lyme St continue to make high quality sofas and armchairs. Exhibitions and Important Houses. At the 1862 International Exhibition (The 3rd World Expo) Howard and Sons entered a suite of library furniture for which they won a prize. They also went on to exhibit at the Paris World’s Fair, called an Exposition Universelle twice; once in 1878 and again in 1900. Also at the Exposition Internationale d’Anvers 1894 (International Exposition/World Fair Antwerp). Winning Prizes at them all including 1 silver and 2 golds. They also employed their eclectic styles working for many important clients providing furniture for important houses such as Sudbury Hall in Derbyshire, Elton Hall, Huntingdonshire and Stokesay Court, Shropshire. This item is available for collection from our Wimbledon warehouses SW19-3BE, we can have it delivered nationwide to include Scotland Wales and Ireland.
