Walnut Victorian 4 Piece Parlor Set Sofa & 3 Chairs Attributed to John Jelliff

Walnut Victorian 4 Piece Parlor Set Sofa & 3 Chairs Attributed to John Jelliff. The set consists of four pieces a sofa, arm chair and 2 side chairs. All four pieces have the caryatids(women’s head) medallions on a crest at the top of the back section of a pieces. The sofa and arm chair feature the Atlantes(male warrior heads) on the arm supports. All four pieces are in great condition, look to have been restored many years ago. The set is very sturdy with no major damage. The last 3 pictures show a sample of the staining on the the seats of the 2 side chairs, the center carving on the sofa has a small piece missing, and a close up of a support brace on the back side of the sofa. Arm chair dimensions are approximately 29″ wide to the outside of the arms, 43″ tall at the center of the back and 24 deep for the seating area. 2 side chairs are approximately 21″ wide across the seat, 40″ tall at the center of the back and 20 deep for the seating area. The John Jelliff workshop was located in Newark, NJ from 1836 to 1860. Lease view all of the pictures as they are part of the description.

John Jelliff Renaissance Revival Sofa

Victorian John Jelliff Renaissance Revival walnut and burl wood sofa. Last quarter of 19th century. With the rare and highly sought after carved helmeted knights or soldiers on each arm and Jenny Lind in the center crest. This design is extremely difficult to find. Covered in a light blue velvet upholstery with original wooden wheels. Also retains the fabric bumper behind the crest. An overall incredible find in this very rare design. Length: 81.5 inches (207 cm). Width: 31.5 inches (80 cm). Height: 46.5 inches (118 cm). Condition: Wood is in great condition with a soft medium brown color. But bear in mind this piece is nearly 125-150 years old and does have some commensurate wear. The springs are tight but the upholstery does show some dirt spots on the seat. RARE LAMINATED ROSEWOOD JOHN HENRY BELTER ROCOCO REVIVAL SETTEE IN THE SCROLL PATTERN CIRCA 1860′s. The matching pair of Belter meridennes are in a separate listing of mine and yes they would look wonderful with this settee. Size: 65″ wide x 35″ high x 20″ deep at deepest point x 15″ from the floor to the top of seat. This is a fabulous piece of furniture. Very good condition with decent fabric. The rosewood is nicely figured. The scroll design is extremely elegant. There are a few old repairs to the scroll work as showing the most obvious repair. This is not unusual on a 160 year old piece. Notice the fine detail. Very comfortable and fitting to the body. Belter was the best of his “period”. This type of furniture was seen in the most exclusive parlor room in the home. This chaise, named Spirit, and part of the Enchanted collection was inspired by the ghostly shapes of furniture draped in sheets in homes during extended periods of being uninhabited. Offered for sale is a Victorian parlor set attrib. Made of walnut with burl highlights this is an outstanding set. The sofa crest features Herons with their beaks stuck through swirling ribbon eating berries, these are amazing carvings. A cameo back center is flanked by chair back ends. Incised carvings decorate the shaped seat rail. The matching chairs offer vining carved leaves centered by an ebony inlaid crest. This set is solid and sturdy, with expected wear and dings for its age. The springs in the sofa need to be retied. Please view and enlarge all photos to get a good look. 15 inches seat to floor. 14.5 inches seat to floor.
