Royal House Antiques is delighted to offer for sale this very rare fully restored four seater Knoll sofa with oversized feather filled cushions. If youre looking at this listing then he chances are you know exactly what this piece is, a very rare, highly collectable piece of English country house furniture. This is the only four seater example I have seen, the cushions are all overstuffed feather filled, the drop arms can be slid on and off in a matter of seconds. The sofa has been fully restored to include being washed back to the base cover, its then been hand dyed this sublime deep rich cigar brown colour. There is one old repair to one back cushion, otherwise there is nothing negative to note condition wise. The arms as mentioned removed for ease of transport as do all the cushions, although this is a large sofa its not unmanageable at all. Height:- 93cm frame only, 105cm to the top of the brass balls. A very good looking well made and exceptionally comfortable piece. This chaise has been fully restored to include having the old upholstery removed, its then been upholstered with this vintage leather hide. The antique studs have a woven affect and have all been hand nail tacked in place, there are just under 1000 of then in this piece. The frame has been checked and the base finished with a hessian base cover. The wood work has all been cleaned waxed and polished. The back reclines and has four positions, you recline it using the two metal handles under each arm. Height:- 94cm, seat height 45cm. Width:- 76.5cm. Depth:- 172cm in the normal position, with the back fully reclined 198cm. The base is coil sprung, coil springs are hand tied eight times each, hessian padded supported and strapped, this is the traditional English method of making quality sofa bases going back hundreds of years. You usually sit directly on a coil base because its so comfortable but in this instance they have added feather filled cushions, not just any feather filled cushions but the base has split panel feather filled cushions with a foam core, what that means is you have a foam centre which has been fitted to a custom made to order bag that has a panel above and below for feathers, this keeps the cushion plump, means the feathers stay exactly where they should and offers simply put the finest level of comfort. In terms of restoration we had a swatch of the leather sent to Italy for them to make an exact dye up, the sofa was then stripped back, hand dyed six times, heated and sealed, its in pretty much retail condition, there are some on scuffs along the base and back but you cant see them. Height:- 76cm from the floor to the top of the sofa frame, 85cm to the top of the cushion. There are around 50-100 high definition super-sized pictures at the bottom of this page. This sofa is in lovely fully restored condition, quite simple and understated by design however if you look closely it has nice detailing, the cabriolet legs are hand carved with Acanthus leaf detailing to the top, the brass stud work is all individually hand tacked, there’s no cheap chain link studding to be found here, the leather upholstery is thick and soft to touch. The frame is fully coil sprung, what that means is not only is the seat platform a traditional Victorian affair but the back is as well making these chairs very comfortable, usually seating from this era just have padding in this area, this sofa has the same kind of coil springs you find in high end mattresses, if you look at one of the pictures from the back you can see the springs pressing on the leather. The sofa has been fully restored to include having the old colour stripped back, it has then been hand dyed and antiqued this lovely deep dark tobacco brown colour, the legs have been stained and polished.
