Material Culture: Hand crafted in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, a very rare American Settee, Early American work of art. Preserved in unusually fine condition, this piece of material culture is an American treasure. Today, forms like this may grace a long hallway, entrance or the landing of a second story. This is a handmade work of art to be cherished for a lifetime by serious collectors of American furniture. Our intent is to ensure long term preservation of the furniture. Material culture is the aspect of social reality grounded in the objects and architecture that surround people. It includes the usage, consumption, creation, and trade of objects as well as the behaviors, norms, and rituals that the objects create or take part in. All of these physical aspects of a culture help to define it. Era: Early American (1640 to 1700). The Early American period was really the first period where a distinct style began to appear within furniture pieces in the colonies that went beyond mere practicality. Ornamental carvings, finials, raised panels and wood turnings were hallmarks of this period. Most joinery was of the mortise and tenon variety, with pine, cherry, birch, maple, oak and fruit woods such as apple comprising the majority of the hardwoods and softwoods used for these pieces. Condition: Excellent – wear consistent with age and use. Dimensions: 95″ length, 22″ width, 34 height. This item is final sale and non-returnable. Circa 1870 Renaissance Victorian bench, sofa. Solid walnut, excellent form with bolsters, stylized shell crest with buttons, gadrooning across top, scroll carvings, reticulated carving on front of bolsters, scroll carved skirt, oval medallions around large turned feet. 74 long, 43.5 tall, 33 deep, 16 seat height. Seat size – 21 deep, 52 between bolsters, 10 dia bolsters. Condition overall good and solid, upholstery is not recent/usable, missing one wood button (see photo), some small wood pieces/nicks, typical nicks/scratches. Selection of items from local estates.
