We sell fine Victorian Furniture but rarely do we have the pleasure of offering a 3 piece Pottier & Stymus Parlor Set. This set was like redone 40 years ago (based on the color and design of the fabrics). There are better, more period fabrics available today however this set is upholstered in the correct style. However if this colorway appeals to you then you could certainly use as is. The upholstery would be very serviceable. It has no damage or tears and frankly we think was not set in, but rather “displayed”. With a reupholster of this set , it would be much more valuable. This set is walnut and the wood seems to be in good condition as does the springs. The incised design has been picked out in gold. The two large medallion on the sofa are not bronze but rather a compo and are finished in a’rose gold’ finish which complements the darker color quite nicely. The medallions on the chairs (also compo) are in the gold used for the incising. Much of it sits in Museums and high end furniture collections. This would have likely been a special order set and likely built for some family of some prominence but not the Vanderbilt’s or Stewarts. Pottier and Stymus was one of the major furniture makers along with Herter Brothers and Belter. We know it is Pottier & Stymus because the incised patter matches known examples of Pottier & Stymus’s work. Refer to an article (page 16) Feb 2002, of Victorian Homes Magazine in which there are photos of a similar chair. Also several auctions of the same style complete the attribution. A complete 3 piece set is a rarity to behold. Quality furniture commands a good price. We have paid more that this for just a sofa in the past. This could potentially bring far more than our ask sitting in a high end designer showroom or antique gallery. This may be your ONLY chance to find a set of this quality under 3K. This may be also be picked up in person in Logansport. Please note items left after 60 days are considered abandoned. Please check our other auctions! Extremely fair considering rarity and value!
