EMPIRE ORMOLU-MOUNTED MAHOGANY RECAMIER. Likely France, circa 1840-60 Item # 803DKR07Q. A very fine presentation piece dressed in gorgeous figured mahogany veneers highlighted with finely chiseled bronze mounts of cornucopia cresting the dramatic scrolls on either side, a motif depicting implements of war (flags, a cannon, pikes, axes and a single drum) in the center of the apron and four wings with spiral shells over either front leg. The relatively slight profile of the sofa allows it to be a highlight in a room without dominating the space or overwhelming the other furnishings – it is thin with a gorgeous sweeping profile that sits beautifully under a bay of windows. The relentless curvature of the back right spiral is followed through in the tight spiral of the right arm and unwinds into the outward splay of the left arm; this is accentuated by the small klismo legs over ball feet. There is a perfect balance of all components, the legs being of a carefully planned thickness and taper to flawlessly compliment the lines of the body. It is expertly upholstered in an old mellow velour – this has wear and some stains and probably should be recovered, but it is beautifully done with a bevelling of edges in the seat back that is admirable. This is an exquisite acquisition for the passionate collector and decorator alike – pure and of inordinately high quality, this is an eye-catching accent piece for any classical interior. 76 1/2 W x 22 3/4 D x 31 1/2 H, 17 H to seat. Condition Report: Early finish with light age appropriate wear as expected. Early (not original) velour with discolorations and minor stains, still remaining very comfortable and enjoyable. Veneer patches and repairs throughout, including the proper right front toe. Please scroll down and view all images of this piece for a full overview of condition.
