AMERICAN CLASSICAL STYLE CARVED MAHOGANY SOFA. Circa mid-to-late 19th century Item # 611MTX05. Of most attractive form in it’s elegant curvalinear profile, the sofa borrows heavily from the Greco-Roman classicism in it’s extreme cyma curved arms and klismo legs. The repeating bee upholstery is stuffed over the rail and having a thin and perfect execution (note the watermark stain on the proper left seat), a distinct contrast to the brilliant mahogany woods throughout. The sofa is probably a revival of the earlier American form, perhaps crafted during the third or fourth quarter of the 19th century, as evidenced by the stylized carvings. Crisp and finely executed reeding compliment the curves, the arms particularly fine with their squeezed veins swirling up into scrolled rosettes; exaggerated versions of the angular floral is employed over both front legs, these terminating in gorgeous original cast brass lion paw sabots. 32 1/2 H x 76 W x 24 1/4 D; approx. 14 1/2-16 H to seat. Condition Report: Upholstery somewhat dirty with a large watermark on seat; old repaired crack in scroll of proper right arm.
