Attributed with references to J H Belter, circa 1850′s. Opulent John Henry Belter “Henry Clay” pattern Victorian Rococo Revival Laminated Rosewood Very Fine eight piece parlor set consisting of a fine Sofa, with deep serpentine seat rail, Marvelous Arm Chair, four nicely executed Side Chairs, and a very impressive pair of opposing Meridiennes. Presented in professional restored condition this marvelous ensemble has been professionally upholstered using the buttoned & tufted fluted design in carnation pink. Our restorer uses a technique closely akin to French Polishing when refreshing the old finish. The Belter Henry Clay pattern chairs have a distinctive outline, looking a little like a stylized cabochon. This set has two horizontal arabesques found on a typical Belter Henry Clay chair, one shaped like an inverted “U” framing the top and the second shaped like a lyre framing the bottom. The set characteristically displays the typical Henry Clay stylized shell carving between the arabesques and the upholstery. The Sofa has fruit and flower carvings on all three crest, a carved Rose Bud & leaves on the knees, and the serpentine skirt panel displays carved flowers & foliage. This set closely resembles the set of Belter Henry Clay parlor furniture from the Henry Clay Mansion in Ashland, Kentucky, the pattern’s name sake set, now decommissioned and in a private collection UPDATE, we have now been informed that the Henry Clay Mansion was able to retain some chairs from the original name sake set, thanks Warren for letting us know.
