A scarce convertible teak sofa daybed with a caned storage backrest, with an upholstered seat cushion. Marked on the underside with makers mark, as pictured. The fabric is original, and does have one small hole, less than 1/4 (please see photos). The finish is in excellent condition, with some minor fading along the top back surface. The edges of the piece are sharp and without issue. Very little “patina” to this piece. The rattan is completely intact, save one small break in one strand of the material of 1/8 or less. As good as they get being original. Structurally without issue and perfect. One leg has had the screw either replaced, or partially unscrewed. As a result, this leg does not tighten properly. There is no problem with the leg itself, but the screw may need to be replaced to achieve a tight join, if desired. The daybed sits stable and completely level. Best known for his chairs and seating pieces, Hans Wegner was a prolific designer whose elegant, often ebullient, forms and devotion to the finest methods in joinery made “Danish Modern” a popular byword for stylish, well-made furniture in the mid-20th century. Wegner considered himself a carpenter first and a furniture designer second. Like his peers Arne Jacobsen and Finn Juhl, Wegner believed that striking aesthetics in furniture were based on a foundation of practicality: a chair must be comfortable and sturdy before it is chic. Wegner was a designer who revered his primary material wood and it shows. His wood gathers patina and character with age; every Hans Wegner piece testifies to the life it has led.
